What the Cabin Filter Does, and What It Is Not
Your car has at least two air filters and they do completely different jobs. The engine air filter cleans air going into the engine for combustion. The cabin air filter cleans air going into the passenger compartment through the aircon and ventilation system. Shops and owners routinely confuse the two, and a car can easily have a spotless engine filter and a cabin filter that has never been changed in its life.
On most cars the cabin filter sits behind the glovebox, in a slot the ventilation air passes through before it reaches the evaporator and your vents. It traps dust, pollen, soot, and road particulates. Some are plain pleated paper, while others add a layer of activated carbon that also absorbs odours, which is why the carbon versions are noticeably better at dealing with diesel exhaust in stalled traffic.
Because the filter sits upstream of the evaporator, it also protects the aircon system itself. A car running without a filter, or with one that has collapsed, allows debris straight onto the evaporator fins where it packs into the core. Cleaning an evaporator is a labour-intensive job that often involves removing dashboard components, so the filter is doing genuine preventive work for its price.
Symptoms of a Clogged Cabin Filter
The clearest sign is weak airflow. If your blower is on maximum and the air arriving at the vents feels feeble, but the air that does arrive is still cold, the problem is almost always restriction rather than refrigerant. Many owners in this situation go straight to an aircon shop expecting a recharge, and a surprising share of those visits end with a filter change.
The second sign is smell. A damp, musty odour when you first switch on the aircon usually means moisture has been sitting in a filter that is saturated with organic dust. Philippine humidity makes this considerably more common than in drier climates, and mould and mildew will establish themselves in a clogged filter given the chance. People often blame the evaporator, and sometimes that is the culprit, but the filter is the cheaper thing to eliminate first.
Other indicators include windows that fog up and take a long time to clear, because restricted airflow reduces the system's ability to dehumidify, and visible dust settling on the dashboard and vent surfaces shortly after cleaning. If you have never changed the filter and the car is more than a year old, pull it out and look. A filter that started white and is now grey-black answers the question immediately.
How Often to Change It in Philippine Conditions
Service manuals commonly quote something in the range of 12,000 to 20,000 kilometres, or once a year. Those numbers are written for average conditions, and Metro Manila does not qualify as average. Heavy traffic means hours of idling directly behind exhaust pipes, drawing in particulates the whole time, while distance travelled stays low. The filter loads up on time spent in traffic, not on kilometres covered.
For city driving in Metro Manila, Cebu, or Davao, every six months is a realistic interval, or roughly every 5,000 to 10,000 kilometres. If you commute daily on EDSA or through similar congestion, six months is not conservative. Drivers who mostly cover provincial highways can reasonably stretch closer to the manual interval, and Grab and TNVS drivers, who spend far more hours in traffic than a private owner, should be checking more often than that.
Rather than tracking dates precisely, make it a habit to inspect the filter whenever the car goes in for an oil change. It takes a couple of minutes, and the filter's appearance tells you what you need to know. Rainy season is a sensible time to be stricter about it, since a damp filter combined with organic debris is exactly the condition that produces the musty smell.
Cost and How to Change It Yourself
Generic aftermarket filters run roughly ₱300 to ₱600. Branded filters and activated carbon versions typically cost ₱600 to ₱1,200, and the carbon type is worth the difference if you regularly sit in traffic behind buses and jeepneys. OEM filters ordered through the casa usually run ₱800 to ₱2,000. If a shop fits it for you, labour is normally ₱200 to ₱500, and dealers often fold it into a scheduled PMS at a higher combined price.
On the majority of cars this is a genuine five to fifteen minute job needing no tools. Empty the glovebox, then release it so it swings fully down, which usually means squeezing the sides inward past their stops or unclipping a damper arm on one side. Behind it you will find a rectangular cover, normally held by tabs you press rather than screws. Slide the old filter out, noting which way up it sits before it leaves the housing.
The one mistake worth avoiding is fitting the new filter upside down. Almost every cabin filter has an airflow arrow printed on its frame, and it must point the same way the old one did, which on most cars means downward toward the blower. Take a photo of the old filter in place before removing it if you are unsure. Vacuum out any leaves and debris sitting in the empty housing, slide the new filter in, and refit the cover and glovebox. If your aircon still blows weakly with a fresh filter correctly fitted, the problem is elsewhere in the system and worth having a shop diagnose.
