Supercapacitor vs Battery: The Spec That Matters Most Here
This is the single most important decision for a Philippine buyer, and most product listings bury it. Dashcams need a small internal power reserve so they can finish writing the current video file when the engine cuts. That reserve is either a lithium-ion battery or a supercapacitor.
Lithium batteries degrade quickly at high temperature, and a car parked in the sun in Metro Manila can reach cabin temperatures far beyond what those cells are rated for. The common failure pattern is a battery that swells, deforms the housing, and either kills the camera or leaves it recording corrupted files you only discover when you actually need the footage. Plenty of owners here have replaced a cheap dashcam annually for exactly this reason.
Supercapacitors tolerate heat far better and have a much longer service life, which is why they are standard on mid-range and premium models. They store less energy, so they only cover file closure rather than extended standalone recording, but that is all the reserve is for. If you buy nothing else on this list, buy a supercapacitor model. It is the difference between a camera that lasts five years here and one that lasts one.
Which Specs Actually Matter
Resolution is the headline number but rarely the limiting one. Treat 1080p as the floor and 1440p as a comfortable target. What actually determines whether you can read a plate is a combination of sensor quality, bitrate, and lens sharpness, so a well-reviewed 1080p camera often out-resolves a cheap unit claiming 4K. Be sceptical of interpolated resolution claims on very cheap listings.
Night and high-contrast performance matter more than resolution in practice. Look for WDR or HDR, which is what lets the camera hold detail when you exit a dark basement car park into glare, or drive an unlit provincial road with oncoming high beams. A field of view around 140 to 160 degrees is the sweet spot: wide enough to catch an adjacent lane, narrow enough to avoid the fisheye distortion that makes distant plates unreadable.
Loop recording and a G-sensor should be considered mandatory, and both are near-universal. Loop recording overwrites the oldest footage so the card never fills, while the G-sensor detects an impact and locks the surrounding clip so it cannot be overwritten. GPS logging, which stamps speed and location onto the footage, is a genuinely useful extra when you are trying to establish what happened.
Single, Dual, or Three-Channel, and the Memory Card Trap
A single front camera covers the majority of incidents and is the right starting point for most owners. A dual-channel setup adds a rear camera, which is worth it if you spend a lot of time in stop-and-go EDSA traffic where rear-end contact is the most likely claim. Three-channel systems add an interior camera and mainly make sense for Grab and TNVS drivers who want a record of what happens in the cabin.
The memory card is where most people quietly go wrong. A dashcam writes continuously for every hour the car runs, which is a far harsher duty cycle than a phone or camera card ever sees. Ordinary consumer microSD cards wear out within months under that load and start producing corrupted or unwritable files, usually without any obvious warning.
Buy a high-endurance microSD card rated for continuous video recording, and match the capacity to your usage. A 64GB or 128GB high-endurance card is a sensible pairing for most setups. Format the card in the camera every couple of months, and every so often play back a random clip on your phone or laptop to confirm the system is genuinely still recording. A dashcam that has silently failed is worse than no dashcam, because you were counting on it.
Parking Mode and How It Gets Wired
Parking mode is what lets the camera keep watching after you switch off, which is the feature most owners actually want after their first car park incident. It cannot run off the ordinary cigarette-lighter socket on most cars, because that socket is usually dead once the ignition is off.
Making it work requires a hardwire kit connected to the fuse box, giving the camera a constant-power line, an ignition-switched line, and a ground. Any competent auto electrician or car accessories installer can do this, and it is a common enough job that most shops will quote it as a routine fitting. It also tidies the cable run, which the socket-powered alternative never does.
The safety consideration is your car battery. A hardwire kit must have a low-voltage cutoff so the dashcam stops drawing current before the battery is too flat to crank. Set that cutoff conservatively, especially if your battery is more than two years old or your car sits unused for days at a time. Choose a motion-triggered or impact-triggered parking mode rather than continuous recording, since continuous parking recording draws far more power and fills the card with empty footage.

Entry-level single-channel cameras generally run ₱1,500 to ₱3,000. At this price expect a lithium battery rather than a supercapacitor, basic night performance, and a short useful life in Philippine heat. They are better than nothing, but the value is poor over a few years.
The mid range, roughly ₱3,000 to ₱8,000, is where most buyers should be looking. This band covers supercapacitor models with genuine 1080p or 1440p sensors, proper WDR, and reliable parking mode support, and many dual-channel kits land here too. Premium and three-channel systems with GPS, higher-resolution rear cameras, and better low-light sensors typically run ₱8,000 to ₱20,000 or more. Budget separately for the high-endurance card and, if you want parking mode, the hardwire kit and its installation.
Car accessory specialists and auto supply stores let you see the mounting hardware and screen quality before you commit, and many will install on the spot. Metro Manila parts districts such as Banawe and Raon carry a broad range at competitive prices. Lazada and Shopee list the widest selection and usually the lowest prices, but the market there includes a lot of unbranded units with inflated specifications, so stick to models you can find independent reviews for. Footage is commonly used as supporting evidence in insurance claims and traffic disputes, which is a good reason not to economise on the camera that produces it.
